FRESH MUSIC:
LEIF VOLLEBEKK – TWIN SOLITUDE
Picture it: Unassuming Leif Vollebekk on the rooftop of the Rialto on Parc Ave, sun setting at his back, the crisp fall air filled with his soulful voice, fuzzy-warm keyboard sounds, his guitar – and of course- his harmonica. The magical equation took place during POP Montreal at the end of September 2016, and after Vollebekk debuted some of the songs from Twin Solitude that night, February couldn’t come soon enough.
It’s the second full-length album from the Montreal singer-songwriter, who counts Bob Dylan among the key influences on his brand of bluesy, passionate indie-folk. Much of the follow-up to his 2013 debut album North Americana was inspired by countless days spent on the road.
As he told Cult MTL: “I don’t write while I’m away, but you see things — there’s something amazing about picking up things while you’re in a different place. It fills up your mind with all kinds of images, and when I stop moving, [the lyrics] are there.”
Twin Solitudes is available now, and you can catch him at his hometown album-launch party Thursday March 2nd at La Tulipe. $17 in advance.
SAM PATCH – YEAH YOU, AND I
Better known as bassist and guitarist for a little band named Arcade Fire, Sam Patch is Tim Kingsbury’s chance to be more than just a cog in a massive, unstoppable wheel. It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy playing with one of the biggest bands in the world, but he’s been itching to go his own way.
As he told The Gazette:
“With Arcade Fire, we’ve explored a lot as a group, such as song structures, that has certainly had an influence on me; but I noticed I don’t necessarily push (my own vision) in Arcade Fire. That’s just how a group works. This was an opportunity to follow my own thread more. It was liberating to do my own thing.”
That vision comes to fruition on Yeah You, And I, an energetic rock record with infectious, poppy hooks that ooze fun.
Yeah You, And I is available now, and you’re in for a tough choice (or a night of concert hopping) because Sam Patch plays Bar Le Ritz PDB Thursday, March 2nd. $12.
OSHEAGA LINEUP:
Osheaga unveiled their 2017 lineup earlier today, and it boasts a ton of talent. British rockers Muse always bring the fire to their live shows, and will be right at home on the Osheaga stage. Alabama Shakes, Father John Misty, Run The Jewels, and Liam Gallagher are just a few of the standouts in a very impressive lineup.
